Executive Director's January Blog
Thank goodness 2020 is behind us! We have two COVID-19 vaccines in distribution and I am hopeful for what 2021 will bring. It won’t be an easy year, but an end to the pandemic is in sight. Some of our health care workers have already received their first shot of the vaccine by now. When it’s your turn to get vaccinated, make sure to get your spot in line, because we all need to get vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. This is the only way we can truly get back to normal.
I’ve been around long enough to not bother with New Year’s resolutions, but if 2020 has taught me anything, it’s that we must feed our souls.
When I started my current role, I discovered the Embarcadero YMCA was only two stops away, which made it easy for me to squeeze in a morning swim before work to keep me grounded and focused on the day ahead. When the pandemic hit and all the gyms were closed, I could no longer swim. Instead, I channeled my energy on expanding services to support our members including our new 24/7 Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and I forgot about me.
In the blink of an eye, I finally poked my head up from my home workspace and it was already summer. My good friend was swimming in the Bay. Now, I grew up on the East Coast where it was common to swim in the ocean, but when I moved to San Francisco, no one recommended it. We all have to get creative in this pandemic, so with a lot of social distancing logistics and planning, I started to swim in the Bay with my safety buddy. It was the reset I needed to release all this tension I didn’t know I had. There aren’t many activities that make me feel more alive than when I’m swimming or floating around in our vast ocean brimming with sea life.
While I have high hopes for 2021, I think it’s safe to say that it will be another tough year, so it’s important to do things that bring you joy and makes you appreciate life. We have a new Well-Being program called Live Feel and Be Better, which is all about turning your goals into achievable habits with trackable progress and a support team to keep you accountable for reaching your goal. Sign up here and make 2021 the year you PRIORITIZE YOU and your health.
