Executive Director's April 2026 Message

Rey Guillen, Executive Director

April marks National Minority Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the health disparities that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority communities and highlighting the importance of taking action to improve health outcomes.

This year's theme, "Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections," resonates deeply with me. It emphasizes that our health is influenced not just by individual choices, but by our environments, cultural backgrounds, and connections.

Why This Matters

As a Latino employee benefits director, I know firsthand that cultural nuances matter in health. Studies show that Hispanic individuals face higher risks of conditions like diabetes and obesity, often worsened by language barriers and lack of access to care. We know that when care is culturally responsive, outcomes improve.

Our Commitment to You

Our goal is to ensure you have the tools to achieve your healthiest self. This month, and always, I encourage you to leverage the following benefits:

  • Diverse Provider Directories: Use our health plan search tools to find doctors who share your background, preferred language, and understand your cultural context.

  • Preventive Care & Screenings: Take advantage of your annual checkups and screenings to detect potential issues early.

  • Mental Health Resources: Mental health carries stigma in many of our communities. Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers confidential counseling to support your mental and emotional well-being.

  • Healthy Habits Initiatives: Small healthy changes, like enjoying cultural cuisines made from scratch rather than processed foods, can make a big difference.

Get Involved!

  • Virtual Wellness Session: Join us for our Nourish & Flourish: Healthy Eating Essentials webinar on April 29 to discuss traditional healthy cooking.

  • Share Your Story: If you have a story about how you've overcome a health barrier, consider sharing it to inspire others.

Let’s use this month to connect, share resources, and take proactive steps toward a healthier future for ourselves, our families, and our community.

In good health,

Rey Guillen
