January 2026 Executive Director's Message

Rey Guillen, Executive Director

Cheers to a new year and another chance to improve our health! Our resolution at the San Francisco Health Service System is to continue nurturing our partnership with you, delivering quality health benefits, and supporting your best life. Here's to a bright 2026!

There are no short cuts to achieving good health--it’s always an ongoing journey. No matter where you are on that journey, we want to ensure that you have the tools to make sure that you are on the right path to a healthier you. This month, our Well-Being division is focused on Health Literacy. People who understand how to use health information are more likely to engage in preventative care and manage their conditions more effectively.

I also encourage everyone to take advantage of your preventative care benefits (medical, dental and vision). Preventive care is crucial because it catches health issues early when they're easier and cheaper to treat, reduces the risk of serious diseases, boosts longevity, lowers overall healthcare costs by avoiding expensive interventions, and promotes a better quality of life through healthy habits and vaccinations, saving lives and improving long-term well-being. Don’t delay, schedule your preventative care appointments today. Some providers’ schedules are already booked well into the new year.

Your emotional health is just as important as your physical health. Our Employee Assistance Program is here to listen and help you navigate ways to manage the stress and challenges in life. You are not alone; EAP counselors are just a phone call away.

For those of you who had a Flexible Spending Account in 2025, remember to send in your receipts for reimbursement to P&A Group by March 31, 2026. City and County of San Francisco employees have a new life and disability provider, New York Life. This is a good time to confirm or update your Beneficiary Designation.

Believe it or not, SFHSS is already working on rates and benefits for Plan Year 2027. This month, we will be submitting the rates and benefits calendar to the Health Service Board. We welcome all members to attend or watch the Health Service Board meetings to learn about upcoming rates or changes to the health benefits.

In good health,

Rey Guillen
