Accessing the Demographics Report

The demographic report for San Francisco Health Service System (SFHSS) can now be accessed through the Open DataSF Portal by following these steps:

  1. Go to this website: https://data.sfgov.org
  2. Type in SFHSS Demographics in the search
  3. Click on the SFHSS Demographics Report

Describing the Open DataSF Portal

The Open DataSF Portal is an initiative by the City and County of San Francisco aimed at increasing transparency, accountability, and innovation by making city data publicly available. Launched in 2009, this platform provides access to a vast range of datasets collected and managed by city departments, covering topics such as public safety, transportation, housing, health, the environment, and more.

Interacting with the Demographic Report on Open DataSF Portal

The data presented in the sections within the pages are in graphs, tables, charts, along with overviews that give you insights into different member characteristics, such as medical plan count of lives, age, gender, ethnicity, and more.

You can hover your mouse pointer over the title of each table, for example, and click on each row to sort them as as pleased:

Near the top right of each table is the Columns button. It is an expand and collapse button that will give you the options to Search within the tables and modify how you would like to filter the data by clicking and unclicking the column titles' tick boxes.

The scroll bar at the bottom of each table allows you to scroll to the whole table by holding down the click button and dragging it to the left or to the right.

The arrows on the bottom right of each table can be clicked to go to the following pages of the data.

Some tables will show the Expand/Collapse Icons on the top corner.

The Expand/Collapse icons are circled in red that looks like an up and down arrows.

If the Expand/Collapse buttons are shown, this means the rows have subcategories that can be expanded.

Using the Filters

The Filter Icon looks like three descending horizontal lines. When clicked, it opens a window and users can refine or narrow down search results, lists, or datasets based on specific criteria chosen.

Navigating the Different Pages of the Demographics Report

The Demographics Report consists of five distinct pages, which can be accessed using the links located at the bottom of each page:

  1. SFHSS Demographics Report Home Page – Provides an overview of the SFHSS demographic report.
  2. Employees and Retirees – Covers demographic details for both active employees and retirees.
  3. Employer Group Demographics – Presents data specific to employer groups.
  4. Retirees and Their Dependents – Focuses on demographic information for retirees and their dependents.
  5. Employees and Their Dependents – Displays demographic insights for employees and their dependents.

For example, if you scroll to the bottom of the webpage, you will see the Employer Group Demographics icon on the bottom and you can click on it to go to that page:

Exporting the Data and Viewing the Source Data

At the top right corner of each table, you’ll see the Kebab Icon (three dots) that will give you the option to export or view the source of the data.

Defining a Zero Value

A value of 0 indicates that the data has been masked for de-identification purposes due to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements.  Values less than a count of 26 are masked.
