Executive Director's September 2024 Message
Fall has arrived and I am excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th. This period captures a time when several countries in Latin America celebrate their independence. This year’s theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” Hispanic Americans have contributed so much to our country's growth. Everything from the food on our table to music, architecture, fashion, and design has benefited from Hispanic influence. Every time I walk the streets of San Francisco’s Mission district, I feel this undeniable vibrant energy pouring out from every corner bodega, restaurant, and street vendor. If you want to experience delicious cuisine and discover something new, this is a great time to support our local Hispanic-owned businesses.
Getting out and exploring is a great way to start Healthy Aging Month in September. Whether you are a retiree or an employee caring for a parent, the weather in the Bay Area is still mild, making it a great time to start healthy routines like taking daily walks. Healthy Aging is about creating lasting healthy habits that will help us live longer and healthier lives, so we can enjoy more quality time with those we love. Having continued social connections is key to aging well, so plan that walk with someone you love today.
Strong social connections enhance our resiliency, and during Suicide Prevention Month in September, it’s important to remember that those connections can save a life. Please take a moment to check on those you care about who you haven’t heard from for a while. Our Well-Being and EAP team has great resources for spotting signs and tips on having important or uncomfortable conversations.
Be well,
Abbie Yant, RN, MA
