Changing Your Benefits

Qualifying Life Events 

Members can change, add or drop existing elections outside of Open Enrollment if you have a Qualifying Life Event:

  • Marriage
  • Domestic Partnership
  • The birth or adoption of a child
  • Legal guardianship of a child
  • The death of a member or dependent
  • Divorce, legal separation, annulment or dissolution of a domestic partnership
  • Loss of other existing health coverage
  • Moving out of your current Plan's service area

Survivors

In the event of a member’s death, the surviving dependent or survivor’s designee should contact SFHSS to obtain information about eligibility for survivor health benefits. For more information, click here.
 

COBRA

Established by federal law, COBRA offers employees and covered dependents the opportunity to elect a temporary extension of healthcare coverage in certain instances where coverage would otherwise end. Employees have the right to purchase continuation of coverage if coverage is lost due to specific Qualifying Life Events. Click here for more information about COBRA coverage.
 

Changes in Employment Status

If you are notified of a change in your employment status, contact SFHSS to learn about the options available for continuing your healthcare coverage to avoid a disruption in coverage for you and your dependents. Click here for more information.
