Executive Director's February 2025 Message

exec director

What a treat to end January with a celebration for the start of the Lunar New Year. I love the idea of firecrackers chasing away evil spirits. It’s like getting a second chance at a fresh start by chasing away whatever is holding us back.

February is Black History Month and this year’s theme is African Americans and Labor. Their historical contributions to our society and their leadership in today’s workforce should be recognized and never forgotten.  As I reflect on all the lessons my black colleagues taught me that enabled me to be a better nurse and leader throughout my career, I am forever grateful and humbled by what I’ve learned. I invite you to explore the wonderful programs around the City that will expand your mind and heart at the Museum of African Diaspora, the Asian Art Museum, and the San Francisco Public Libraries.

February is also Heart Health MonthHeart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Learn about the symptoms and signs of a heart attack or stroke. Be sure to seek help immediately if you experience any of those symptoms. Your ability to recover may depend on how quickly you can get help.

When it comes to heart disease, prevention is better than any prescription drug on the market. Start by eating healthy and being physically active. Learning to manage your stress and carving out time to get enough sleep will go a long way to prevent heart disease. The American Heart Association also has 8 ways couples can make resolutions that boost health and relationships.

Every health journey should include an annual wellness exam. Many doctors require long lead times to get an appointment, so schedule your exam now. I’ve already got mine scheduled for this year.

Be well,

Abbie Yant, RN, MA
