SFHSS Interim Executive Director's May 2025 Message
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of mental well-being for all. One of SFHSS’ strategic goals is to support the mental health and well-being of our membership and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. We believe a healthy mind leads to a healthier and more productive workplace. Let's make this Mental Health Awareness Month a time of focus and support.
I want to encourage you to take care of yourselves, both personally and professionally. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Prioritize Self-Care: Make time for activities that help you relax and recharge. (One of my favorite hobbies is assembling LEGO sets. I find it to be a therapeutic activity that reduces stress and anxiety, while also providing a sense of accomplishment and focus.)
- Recognize Stress: Pay attention to signs of stress and seek support when needed.
- Utilize Resources: Familiarize yourself with available mental health support options, including our EAP, employee assistance program, and resources on the SFHSS Well-Being website.
- Open Communication: Encourage open and supportive conversations about mental health within the workplace.
- Support Each Other: Be mindful of your colleagues and offer a helping hand when needed.
This month, our Well-Being and EAP teams have launched a “Be Seen in Green” challenge, a campaign designed to raise awareness for mental health. The color green has been adopted internationally to represent mental health awareness, symbolizing new life, growth, and renewal. Wearing green, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month, demonstrates support and reduces stigma associated with mental health. Please encourage your coworkers and friends to show their support and help raise awareness for mental health by wearing green throughout May.
Mental health issues can impact anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. The City and County of San Francisco recognizes the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive workplace that prioritizes mental health and well-being. We want to ensure that all our members feel comfortable and safe sharing their struggles and accessing the resources and support they need.
If you or someone you love is struggling with a mental health issue, please reach out for help.
Take care,
Rey Guillen
